Richard Kaplan’s varied interests and motivations are reflected in his films. The different categories under which they are listed provide some indication of this. But each of his films has a unique story to tell and the choice of subject is prompted by many factors: artistic, ideological, technical and financial considerations all play a role. It is the filmmaker’s approach to the subject that gives each of the films its distinctiveness and style.

Several themes have shaped his film career and are reflected in his choice of subjects... a love of travel ...an interest in history... the importance of education... human rights and the freedom of ideas ...internationalism and cultural exchange... the need for social and political change ...an unwillingness to accept the status quo... the acceptance of new ideas and new experiences; all are apparent in his body of work.

The importance of research and planning is paramount. At the same time one must be open to new insights and information that may be uncovered during filming. The documentary process requires one to discard preconceptions.
